We Grow Trees: Forests provide shelter, wildlife habitat, clean water, spiritual and cultural touchstones, and for many, the means to earn a living.
Our forests are valued for their diverse ecosystems and unique biodiversity, for their ability to regenerate and regrow and sequester carbon, for the provision of wood products, their aesthetic value and recreational opportunities.
For many, the term “sustainable forestry” may seem like an oxymoron. How can harvesting ever be sustainable when, by definition, it requires that trees be cut down?
The complete answer is complex, but if we had to reduce it to one word, it would be “balance.”
We need this balance because forest products are an important part of the solution to the environmental challenges that we face.
The hallmark of sustainable forestry balances the needs of society, the environment, wildlife, and forest communities. We do this by maintaining a balance of plantation timbers, regenerated native timbers and protected forests.
In Tasmania we have approximately 250 million hardwood and 75 million softwood trees growing in our sustainable and renewable plantation forests, and that number is growing all the time.
We are committed to a future of sustainable growth and only 14 of every 10,000 native trees are harvested in Tasmania and every single tree used is regrown and replaced for the future.
We grow trees and we add value to timber products, which in turn adds value to the carbon balance.
Did you know an average three bedroom house worth of construction pine grows in Tasmania’s plantation forests every 90 minutes?
